New anti gun legislation hurts Oregonians

One step closer for more anti gun legislation

Yesterday, the Oregon Senate Judiciary Committee voted 3 to 2 down the party line to move Senate Bill 1551 to the Senate Rules Committee.  As previously reported, SB 1551 would criminalize the otherwise lawful private transfer of firearms.  This move is most likely due to the fact that the Senate Rules Committee is not subject to the same deadline requirements as other committees.  Now, more than ever, it is critical to contact members of the Senate Rules Committee and express your OPPOSITION to this overreaching legislation.
Using the contact information provided below, please call AND e-mail members of the Senate Rules Committee and respectfully urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 1551.

Concealed Carry in Illinois is here

There are a lot of hoops to jump through...

   a) Must posses a Illinois FOID card (Firearm Owners ID card)

   b) 16 hours of approved training (may be lower depending on applicants current training and certification and military training) no less than 8 additional hours

   c) Application fee of $150 for Illinois residents ($300 for non residents)

   d) Online application process through state police.

but the point is, Sunday January 4th, 2014 they will begin taking applications online.

Am I going to get one? Hell yes.
Am I going to Illinois? Probably not. I am not crazy. But, if I ever have to go I want to be able to protect myself. Murphy's law and all that.

For now I have the online and in-person classes in many states, but I think I will get certified to teach the excruciatingly long class class just for giggles.

And don't forget that anyone can watch Jefferson teaching handgun safety for free at www.oregonconcealedtraining.com
(as soon as the server is switched over, hopefully by January 02, 2014

I hope you all had as great of a new year as I did

Why do emergency preparedness?

There are many of us like minded folks out there that are now nicknamed "preppers". We prepare ourselves for hard times and believe one day we may need to use our provisions. While we all have different motivators for preparing, we all try to have a complete ration of supplies for hard times.  I personally am not an “end of the world” or “zombie apocalypse” kind of guy, but I do believe history repeats itself.

Just because we live in the United States of America does not mean that war cannot visit our shores.  I also live in Oregon right at the base of the Cascade Mountain Range (literally).  This is an active volcanic range with active bulges growing right now on the South Sister in Bend and Mt. St. Helens in Washington.  We have many siezemic monitors located throughout my town for study and warnings.  So what? Will they erupt again in my lifetime? Probably not, but if they do and the food supply is cut off, roads or bridges destroyed, or no power for weeks, I will be able to still feed my family.

A few years ago I was working on a utility crew for 6 days a week and long hours in the day.  All of the sudden we went from a work crew of 26 to 6 and a work week of 6 days to 3.  Ouch!  For the next year my family lived of our food storage and other supplies without having to get help from family, friends, or our highly funded government.  So it is not always the major disasters to prepare for, but the small and turbulent events of everyday life.

So I encourage all to be prepared for the unexpected.  I tell people I plan for the future as if nothing will ever happen (I have big dreams for me and my family I want to come true), but I prepare as if everything that can go wrong will.  This ensures that either way, my family will  have a good future.

Living Social Sucks

  Well...
Today I can not say enough bad things about Living Social. We had a contract with Living Social for concealed handgun classes that was supposed to run for three days. As part of the agreement, we were to schedule a lot of extra classes to accommodate the extra traffic. After one day they pulled the deal because they conveniently remembered that they do not promote gun use.
Well now I have twenty classes scheduled with a couple people in each one. Thank you living social. It is so fun to drive four hours and hold a four hour class and have one student in a $150 room.

Groupon says they are gonna help me recoup some of my losses. End of the month deal at Groupon.

Oregon Concealed Weapons Permit

In Oregon we have a concealed handgun license. In some other states they have a concealed weapons permit which can extend to more than handguns. Although we only license to carry a concealed handgun, we are a shall issue state. Meaning, if you meet the requirements and pass a background check there is no reason for the sheriff dept. to not issue you a license.

Upon completion of a recognized safety class, you take your certificate to the county sheriff office and apply for your Oregon concealed handgun license. In most counties this process will take 3-5 weeks.

FREE Oregon concealed carry class.

People ask about my free classes all the time......
Well, It's easy, there's no catch, and no gimmicks.

When you host a private class you, as the host, get incentives and bonuses. Kind of like hosting a Tupperware party, only it's a better party, with better stuff, and better prizes. A lot of people hear "Private Class" and assume that it is going to cost more, but the opposite is true.

 Q. Well, what if I don't want a bunch of strangers at my house.
 A. You only have who you want. Friends, family, co-workers, church members.
 A. You don't have to have it at your house. Use your church, work, local grange, fire dept., If you    have more than 20 people, and can't find a spot, I will rent one.

 Q. What if I don't have someplace to shoot?
 A.  There is no range time in our concealed carry class. We teach shooting, and hold our classes                 separate from concealed classes so that we can have one on one instructor to student ratio. There is no shooting required to obtain your concealed handgun license in Oregon, Utah, or Arizona.

The way the Free class works is you (as the host) get a spiff for each person that you brought to the class. The minimum class size depends on how far we have to travel to give the class, but the incentives are the same no matter what.
Five people paying for their class gets you your Oregon class for free. Ten in your class will get you your Oregon and Utah, and fifteen will get you Arizona too.
If you already have one or all of these, there are other prizes and awards available such as holsters, targets, exploding targets, books, ammo, etc.  As the size of the class increases, so do the prizes.

Our class is four hours long. Sometimes a little longer depending on the people. If you have 20 people, and want to do a barbecue in the middle of it, it will take a little longer.

Call or email for more info on how to set up a private class, or to pick a date.

What does "concealed" mean?

DON & LINDA LEACH
Oregon Concealed Co. Founders

"It is important to understand the “concealed” concept. With the background we have provided above, with no statutory or administrative law definitions of the word “concealed” in the law, it becomes a term of legal art with its common meaning. Flowing from this treatment and attached to the statute is a “mens re” or “criminal mind set.” The alleged “criminal” had to have intended to conceal, to hide, or to secret his gun on his or her person, or within his or her control to be guilty of the crime of wrongfully carrying a concealed handgun.

·     To carry concealed, one has to intend the handgun be hidden from view and/or secreted so that others cannot see it."
Copywrite 2012 by Don Leach, author of Oregon Concealed - The Best Defense
This book will be availabe from oregonconcealed.com in July, 2012

"The examples in Oregon Concealed are true, taken from my case files as a practicing attorney. However, most of the names and locations have been changed to protect privacy; e.g. John Smith, Jane Smith, Bad Guy 1 or 2, etc. from Somewhere, Pandora County. Police, whether State, County, or City are referred to as Officer 1, 2, etc.

As the author my goal is to give you a complete understanding on the application of the concealed gun laws in Oregon in order that you may make informed decisions. The choice to carry concealed lawfully is the reader’s, but I believe that responsible gun owners can and should follow the law as it is applied today if they want to keep their involvement with enforcement minimal." From Oregon Concealed - the Best Defense - Using Deadly Force - Copywrite Don Leach 2012. This how to survive book will be available in July, 2012

Oregon Concealed BOOK by Don Leach

"I have nothing but the highest and even bitter contempt for Oregon presiding judges who pass judicial administrative regulations that keep honest people from carrying handguns for their personal protection in the courthouse and the courtroom. They violate their oath of office and no amount of legal mental masturbation can justify that contemptible practice, which in my perspective is a complete prostitution of themselves and their personal integrity to the other branches of government in violation of my fundamental constitutional right to be able to have immediate protection for myself and third parties in my presence." A new book, "Oregon Concealed."

My book "Oregon Concealed" will be available in digital formats in about 3 to 4 weeks. What it deals with are the practical aspects of what we each need to know to carry in Oregon. I use a bunch of my experiences from the practice of law when I was representing clients here in Oregon to help people understand what they have to do to stay out of trouble with enforcement. If you have an interest in this book, contact me at don@ochlc.com. The price is not yet set but will be between $13 and $17. In paper it will also include S&H. I am still working on the logistics but again, it will soon be available.

When this is on line and ready to order, see http://www.ochlc.com/viewCategories.asp for information on how to order on-line and in what formats it will be available.

UnderTech concealment options.

Another good way to carry your concealed handgun is with Undertech compression shirts and shorts. With a small or midsize handgun, you can carry under you shirt or pants without the worry of someone seeing your handgun. There are many good techniques for concealment, but there is something to be said about being able to reach, stretch, and bend over without someone seeing what you want concealed.
