Woman conceal carry options. (part 1)

What is a good concealment technique for women?
This is a question we get a lot. Many instructors have guns they recommend for women, I still say try them out, try a bunch, and practice often. Handle a hundred guns at gun stores and shows. Pick 5-10 that feel great in your hand, and then go to a range or a friend and shoot the hell out of them. Don't spend $300-$1500 on a handgun and then regret it.

You have your gun, now how do you conceal it.
This post would be too long and boring if I talked about every concealment technique so we will cover one or two at a time.

                                    The Flash Bang

The Flash Bang is a great design for women who want more option to carry. 1) Don't let your wardrobe prevent you from carrying. 2) Don't let carrying prevent you from dressing how you like. My wife loves the Flash Bang. There are many videos of this holster being demonstrated on YouTube.
My daughter does not love it quite as much. The only downside I see to the Flash Bang is that you pretty much have eto have more than an "A" cup to conceal effectively.
If you watch the demos, and practice, you do not really need to worry about exposing yourself with this holster. And, if you have to use your gun you probably would not care anyway.

If the Flash Bang is not right for you, there are many other options.

   Dyna Holster Handbag

The Dyna™ is a soft-style bag with plenty of interior space and multiple exterior pockets. The zippered main storage compartment accommodates your personal items. Another zippered pocket in front, along with pockets on each end, securely holds cell phones, sunglasses and other often-needed items. Piped seams and nickel-plated solid brass hardware contribute to the purse’s good looks and durability. The Dyna’s self-contained side-entry holster compartment accommodates most small and large-frame defensive handguns, and like all Galco handbags features a locking zipper for added security.

Compact Conceal Carry Pistol Kahr CM40

The new CM40 takes Kahr’s value-priced line of DAO pistols a step farther by being chambered in .40 S&W. Barrel length is 3 in., overall length is 5.47 in., width is 0.94 in., and weight is 17.7 oz. Other features include textured polymer grips and drift-adjustable, white-bar combat rear sight and pinned-in polymer front sight. Finish is matte.

With a price starting around $500, this is a great deal for a great gun. If you are going to carry concealed, you do not need to compromise stopping power if you want to carry a smaller gun that that you can easily conceal.

At first glance the CM40 is no larger than the CM9 that made its debut last year.

1000's getting Concealed license in Oregon

When I say thousands are getting their concealed licenses in Oregon, what I mean is, before the end of the year, I will certify at least a thousand more. This does not include the many other instructors that will also be certifying people to apply for their license.
I honestly believe that we at Oregon Concealed help more people in Oregon get their Oregon, Utah, and Arizona licenses than anybody else in Oregon. Now... we are making it even easier.
We have a Groupon going in the Eugene market for a concealed handgun class to get your Oregon certificate.
 Oregon class $35
 Oregon class for 2 $65
Online Oregon class at your convenience $35

We have lots of classes scheduled in Portland and Salem
   Check it out.

Double Barrel .45 semi-auto

If you have not seen Arsenal Firearms new .45, now is as good a time as any to go check it out.
Although (even though I have not fired one yet) it is not going to be my first recommendation for a conceal carry firearm for personal defense, it is seriously awesome. I can not wait to get my hands on one. I have watched the YouTube video dozens of times.
The AF2011-a1 is a 1911 style pistol that is branded as "a new pistol for a new century"
I want to fire one, but mostly I want to have it sitting in my classroom when I do my concealed handgun classes. I love a good topic of discussion.
The only reason I would not carry it concealed is the fact that a 1911 is already a good sized pistol. And then, double the width and the weight. But, "oh man" talk about stopping power.
You can learn more about this pistol at the link below. Someone tell me when they find it for sale. I want one.

Why do emergency preparedness?

There are many of us like minded folks out there that are now nicknamed "preppers". We prepare ourselves for hard times and believe one day we may need to use our provisions. While we all have different motivators for preparing, we all try to have a complete ration of supplies for hard times.  I personally am not an “end of the world” or “zombie apocalypse” kind of guy, but I do believe history repeats itself.

Just because we live in the United States of America does not mean that war cannot visit our shores.  I also live in Oregon right at the base of the Cascade Mountain Range (literally).  This is an active volcanic range with active bulges growing right now on the South Sister in Bend and Mt. St. Helens in Washington.  We have many siezemic monitors located throughout my town for study and warnings.  So what? Will they erupt again in my lifetime? Probably not, but if they do and the food supply is cut off, roads or bridges destroyed, or no power for weeks, I will be able to still feed my family.

A few years ago I was working on a utility crew for 6 days a week and long hours in the day.  All of the sudden we went from a work crew of 26 to 6 and a work week of 6 days to 3.  Ouch!  For the next year my family lived of our food storage and other supplies without having to get help from family, friends, or our highly funded government.  So it is not always the major disasters to prepare for, but the small and turbulent events of everyday life.

So I encourage all to be prepared for the unexpected.  I tell people I plan for the future as if nothing will ever happen (I have big dreams for me and my family I want to come true), but I prepare as if everything that can go wrong will.  This ensures that either way, my family will  have a good future.

Concealed Handgun Class Discount (Groupon)

Well, I got start by saying Living Social Sucks. They said they would run an ad for my class, so I scheduled a dozen extra classes. After running my ad for half a day they pulled it back off because they have internal policies against this kind of thing. "How did it get ran in the first place?"
The (very nice) girl that set my ad up was let go hours after it started online.
Essentially this left me with 20 classes scheduled with 4-5 people in each one.

Thank you Groupon. Groupon is running a new deal starting tomorrow (for 3 days) and will help fill my classes. The deal is for 50% of an Oregon class or an Online Oregon class or 57% off two Oregon classes.
I would like to boycot Living social,
but...... I love a good deal.

Living Social Sucks

  Well...
Today I can not say enough bad things about Living Social. We had a contract with Living Social for concealed handgun classes that was supposed to run for three days. As part of the agreement, we were to schedule a lot of extra classes to accommodate the extra traffic. After one day they pulled the deal because they conveniently remembered that they do not promote gun use.
Well now I have twenty classes scheduled with a couple people in each one. Thank you living social. It is so fun to drive four hours and hold a four hour class and have one student in a $150 room.

Groupon says they are gonna help me recoup some of my losses. End of the month deal at Groupon.

Oregon Concealed Weapons Permit

In Oregon we have a concealed handgun license. In some other states they have a concealed weapons permit which can extend to more than handguns. Although we only license to carry a concealed handgun, we are a shall issue state. Meaning, if you meet the requirements and pass a background check there is no reason for the sheriff dept. to not issue you a license.

Upon completion of a recognized safety class, you take your certificate to the county sheriff office and apply for your Oregon concealed handgun license. In most counties this process will take 3-5 weeks.

10 year old shooting an exploding target

We have a lot of fun when we go out and take the kids. We want them to learn that besides the safety and responsibility involved in firearms, there is an element that can be fun. As much as I preach practice, practice, practice... some would think that it could start sounding like a chore..

Mix it up. Have some fun. Make it a family outing. The next weekend that we do not have three or four concealed handgun classes we are going to make a picnic lunch, take the whole family, and make a day out of it. I can't wait.
